Sometimes everything comes together and you get an epic lightshow like this one from Kuta Beach in Bali.

You usually can't predict when a sunset will go from average to epic, but there's a few ingredients I've noticed that tend to push one over the top.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Low, diffused clouds with enough of a gap at the horizon to let the brightest colors through.

It's also nice if the foreground reflects what's happening in the sky -- like the wet sand here.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
At this point I knew the sunset was going to be amazing so I was scrambling to get in position to take advantage of the peak light.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
As the sun drops below the horizon, the best colors (red, orange, magenta) are highlighted.

Usually you won't see these colors because they disappear into the cloudless sky or you have clouds on the horizon, blocking the best colors.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
In just a few minutes the sunset started to peak, with the red and orange tones lighting up like fire.

I used a neutral density filter to balance the darker foreground with the bright sky. It would be tough to get the complete range of colors without a filter like that.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
This shot would not have been half as good without the reflection from the sky on the wet sand.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Bali is very close to the equator so the sunsets don't last very long. Once the green flash hits the horizon (for you Jack Sparrow fans), everything starts to fade pretty quickly.

My friend Anders was walking his dogs on the beach that night so I asked him to be an impromptu model.

From my experience, shots of a sunset alone can get boring so I try to include something else in the frame whenever I can. Yes, I realize I may be boring some of you with an entire gallery of just sunset photos...

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
The sunset was really peaking here, these colors lasted less than a couple minutes so I was trying to get as many angles as I could before everything faded.

Sunsets at Kuta (especially during the rainy season) can be pretty awesome.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
I asked this surfer to pose for a quick photo when he walked by.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Again, always trying to include something in the frame other than the sunset alone.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
I shot this photo with a slow shutter to capture some of the motion of the tide going out while it reflected the colors from the clouds.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
It's past the peak at this point, you can see the upper layers of clouds fading to black.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Because the colors were fading in the upper cloud layers, I zoomed the lens to just focus on the bright clouds at the horizon.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
There was also some really interesting color happening to the north where the last light was fading from orange to magenta.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Even though the sunset had already passed its peak, the fading light to the north still had great color.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Zoomed in again on this shot to crop out the darkening sky above and focus on the colors.

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Anders (and his dogs) obligingly walked past again as models. Bella seemed pretty interested in what I was doing with the camera.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Like the last embers of a fire that's already burnt out, the colors faded from the sky as the sun dropped further below the horizon.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
I shot a slower shutter here to give a bit of motion to this shot of Anders with his dogs.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Almost totally dark to the north.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
But still a great range of colors painting across the sky.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Just before 7 p.m. the light was really dropping off but the red colors still glowing on the clouds closest to the horizon.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Shot at 1/20th of a second, when I panned the camera to follow Anders the backgroud blurred.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
With darkness quickly closing in, this local fisherman set up his position in the surf to see what he could catch for the night.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
I should have asked him to turn on his headlamp -- would have added a really cool focal point for this shot to draw your eye to the fisherman.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
It would be pretty tough to fish around Kuta Beach during the day with all the surfers / swimmers.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
After the last light of the sunset faded, I switched to the fisheye lens. The sand was still wet from low tide and almost looked like water.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Not really sure how practical the 8mm focal length of the fisheye is going to turn out to be, but here it is.

  • The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali

The Best Sunset I've Seen at Kuta Beach, Bali
Staring straight up with the fisheye gives a kind of outer space view of Kuta Beach. Again, not sure how practical it is but it's cool to mess around with.
