Travel Photography Portfolio: Capturing the Spirit of Place

One of the greatest challenges (and rewards) of a photo assignment to a new destination is how to capture the spirit of a place in just a few frames that your magazine editor will use to illustrate the story.

In just a few shots, the readers need to get the feeling of the place that’s described in the story. One of the best ideas that I’ve come across when trying to capture the spirit of a place is to think like a movie director or cinematographer. The language of film is very similar to still photos, and using the common technique of a wide shot to establish the scene then allows you to zoom progressively closer on the details of the place that you’re trying to capture.

This photo gallery includes my favorite shots from magazine assignments, commissioned photo shoots, and personal travel that bring back the spirit of the places I’ve been. I hope these shots create the same feeling for you.

If you like the style of the travel photos you’ve found here, just send me an e-mail and I’ll get back to you right away. I’m currently accepting new clients for location / destination photo shoots. I’m based most of the year in Bali, Indonesia, but am available to travel internationally if you’d like to talk about working together to create a collection of one-of-a-kind photographs to capture the essence of your personality, lifestyle brand, or travel destination.
