Escaping Kathmandu: Exploring Nepal's Dadhikot Village |
Kathmandu is nice of course, but it's also nice to get outside the big city and check out the more relaxed village life that is much more the norm for daily life in Nepal. My friend Steve was in the Peace Corps in Nepal before the program was evacuated because of a bombing in 2004. While he was a volunteer he lived in a village called Dadhikot, located just outside Kathmandu and situated in the Himalayan foothills with amazing view of the Himalayan mountains. After our Yeti Air flight was cancelled and we decided to give up on seeing the Everest Base Camp region, we caught a local bus towards Bhaktapur and spent a few days in Dadhikot with Steve's host family. I had been there in July 2006, and it was definitely nice to be back and see what had changed (and what had not). The view of the Himalayas was still amazing of course, and we were up with the sun to catch the reddish glow of the alpenglow as it touched the snow-capped peaks. |
