Yunnan (112 Photos) |

Literally meaning "South of the Clouds", China’s Yunnan province is located in the southwest of the country and is home to some of the tallest Himalayan mountains in China. The provincial capital is located in Kunming, an overnight bus ride from Lijiang, the UNESCO World Heritage site and gateway for foreign tourists looking to trek the Tiger Leaping Gorge or explore the Tibetan culture of Zhongdian (Shangri-La). My brother Preston and I caught a domestic flight from Shanghai to Kunming in December 2009 to begin our Northwest Yunnan adventure (thanks again to Ann and Ed for the Yunnan travel advice!). We explored the cobbled streets of Old Town Lijiang, stayed overnight in Zhongdian, and trekked the Tiger Leaping Gorge trail—definitely the highlight of the trip to NW Yunnan. This photo gallery includes my favorite travel photos from around Yunnan province. Many of these Yunnan photos are available as a free download to use as wallpaper for your iPhone or computer desktop. | ||
